About Hearing Loss

Hearing loss affects millions of people worldwide, impacting communication, relationships, and overall well-being. Often gradual and hard to notice, hearing loss can make it challenging to follow conversations, enjoy music, or hear warning sounds. Causes vary widely, from age and noise exposure to genetic factors and infections.

At our practice, we understand the unique challenges hearing loss can bring, and we’re here to help you manage it effectively. With advanced hearing assessments and personalized solutions, we’re committed to helping you achieve better hearing and reconnect with the sounds you love.

Types of Hearing Loss

Understanding the type of hearing loss you may have is an important step in finding the right treatment. Here are the three main types:

  • Conductive Hearing Loss: This type occurs when sound cannot travel efficiently through the outer or middle ear. Causes can include blockages, ear infections, or structural issues. Conductive hearing loss is often treatable, either medically or surgically.
  • Sensorineural Hearing Loss: This is the most common form, caused by damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or auditory nerve. Often permanent, sensorineural hearing loss can be caused by aging, prolonged noise exposure, or genetic factors. Hearing aids are often highly effective in managing this type.
  • Mixed Hearing Loss: As a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, mixed hearing loss involves both the outer or middle ear and the inner ear. Treatment will depend on the specific causes and may include a combination of medical and hearing aid solutions.

Our audiologist, Dr. Kamila Bome, is trained to accurately diagnose the type of hearing loss you may have and recommend the best path forward for your unique needs.

Signs of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss can develop so gradually that you might not notice it at first. Here are some common signs to watch for:

  • Difficulty understanding conversations: Often asking people to repeat themselves or struggling to follow along, especially in noisy environments.
  • Turning up the volume: Needing to raise the volume on the TV or radio higher than others.
  • Muffled sounds: Feeling that sounds are unclear, as if people are mumbling.
  • Social withdrawal: Avoiding social situations or group gatherings due to difficulty hearing.
  • Tinnitus: A ringing or buzzing in the ears, which often accompanies hearing loss.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it may be time to schedule a hearing test. Early diagnosis can make a significant difference in your quality of life, helping you stay connected and engaged with the people and activities you enjoy
